UEC to Create Digital Twin of Next Generation Ship Engine

The United Engine Corporation of the Rostec State Corporation will create a digital twin of a next generation gas turbine engine for ships with displacement of up to 12,000 tons. The project will allow better control over the life cycle of the power plant, and increase the reliability and competitiveness of Russian ship engines. The digital twin will be completed in 2023.

A digital twin is a mathematical model of a device, containing all interrelated data required for simulating its operation. It allows to predict the performance of various structural elements at all stages of the creation and life cycle of the device. The digital twin will be created by the Rybinsk-based UEC-Saturn, together with Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Skoltech and CIAM.

“Digitalization reduces the time and costs related to designing various power plants, such as next generation gas turbine ship engines, helps implementing required design characteristics, optimizes costs of manufacturing prototypes, as well as engine testing and fine-tuning. The digital twin will also allow us to offer our customers a highly cost-effective service in a full life cycle contract that includes the supply and maintenance of the engine at all stages of its operation,” said the Deputy General Director and Chief Designer of UEC, Yury Shmotin.

The R&D project will include the creation of high-precision mathematical models of the gas turbine engine and gearbox for a 20.2 MW basic ship engine, and a 25 MW next generation ship engine with RO55 gearbox. The project will also develop a system for managing technical requirements and engine configurations based on manufacturing information, and predicting product performance.
